General enquiry: EV kit cars abroad

I’ve just found this forum after surfing about the net and reading some of the basics on the EV topic. Now I was wondering if anyone can help me with some sound advice.

I’m in Panama and I’d love to build my own electric car as a hobby. I don’t need to go further than 100 km at a time, I only need a two-seater and top speed isn’t so important, although some acceleration would be fun.

So I guess going electric would be a realistic option. Really, I’d love to build the car from a classic car kit.

I should mention that it’s a little hilly here, it rains quite a lot and a little ground clearance would help with the pot-holes. One more point: I would like to keep costs down.

Could anyone suggest:

  1. Some companies that produce classic car fibre glass body kits or a good source where I can find a list of reputable producers ? Or has anyone tried making their own body parts ? Any good websites on this ?
  2. Anybody had any experience with shipping such fragile and possible dangerous (acid battery?) parts ?
  3. Which electric kits might be best for my needs ?

Any other advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you very much for your help.

Maurice

Sorry to say I can’t think of any fiber glass body shops, or battery acid suppliers
I can’t say I know of any kits to recommend.

You seem pretty set on going for a kit. But for a penny pitcher, buying the parts separately and figuring out how to make it work is a hole fortune cheaper.

The kits a found (for a 72v system) go for around $6,000
But I found a 72v motor on ebay for $350, a 72v motor controller for $300. I don’t know what batteries would cost, so lets say they cost $60 each (this is a guess). You need 6 batteries to get 72v, so that would cost $120. That should be the most expensive part of the car. And that would be for $770.

You would need to invest more for the car, cables, a potentiometer (for the controller) etc.
But the kit doesn’t come with the car, or batteries.

By buying the kit you pay to know the will work, and for some kind of strait forward instruction. But my advice would be to think out the design your self, and save money by buying the parts your self.

I can figure out the specs for your car if you are going to do it your self.

Keep in mind it takes good performance to make it up a steep hill.
Here is the site for a do it your self-er

This guy has his email listed on his site, he is willing to give advice to an EV fanatic, and he’s good about getting back to you quickly = )
He said that he wished he had gone with a higher voltage.

I’ll be watching this tread, so let me know what you think.

You can order fiberglass body parts from this site (I think, I don’t know if there creditable)

Try a Google search

I take it you want to make your own lead acid battery / batteries. I don’t have any experience in shipping them, but maybe this will still help you.

Lead acid batteries use lead metal (Pb), and lead(IV)dioxide as electrodes, and the acid is sulfuric acid (when fully charged that is).

You can by sulfuric acid at this site

You can by lead battery plates at this site

I hope this helps
