CV Shaft slipping Out

Anyone else experience their CV shafts slipping out of either the transmission or hub during a large articulation (hitting a bump, going up a steep driveway, coming off a cart path with a steep drop, etc.)?

First time it happened I thought my tires were rubbing hard against the fender. Second time it definitely sounded metal-to-metal grinding, like the spline trying to grab the grooves…only for a half a second or so. Only happens on the driver’s side.

Granted I do have softer-than-stock progressive struts and is lifted 2in in the front. Doesn’t seem like that’d be enough to cause the CV to slip though.

These are brand new CV’s from NEV Accessories, so I don’t think it’s bad, nor do I want to break it so I’ve stopped driving it for now.

My guess is that with the lift, the CV shaft(s) may be just a little too short. With the 2" lift, the CV shaft should be extended more than 2" to keep everything the same as it was before the lift. Sorry to say but you may need to buy longer shafts, the good news is though that you can get just the shafts and still use your cups.

Shim the shafts inward at the wheel end with flat washers

@Old_Houseboater You’re talking about on the outside of the hub, where the nut is right?gem_halfshaft_old

PLACE BETWEEN THE CV JOINT AND THE SPINDLE CARRIER. The washers go against the CV joint

That seems to have did the trick. Thanks for the tip!

In case anyone else runs into this, I used 4x 3/4" Grade 8 (automotive grade) washers on the driver’s side only, which totals roughly 1/2" thickness.

I’ll probably add 4 to the passenger side too eventually, even though I didn’t notice it on that side, but for now seems good.

Thanks again @Old_Houseboater

Can you post a picture of how you added the washers? I am having the same problem when I climb our steep driveway.

Gotta get the cv totally off and put the washers on the spline

Thank you…I can’t wait to fix this annoying issue. Lately, every time I go up my driveway…the same grinding sound and the motor actually “stalls” and shuts off.

No problem, be patient, makes it a bit harder to get the CV back on the transmission side. I had to disconnect my brake line to allow the control arm to go lower to get the CV back on

Nice helpful tips

Yeah, nothing worse then when you want to hit it and your shaft slips out…
