CV joint snap ring. Is this what i am looking for?

Hey guys i am trying to replace the boots on the CV shafts on my 2002. I read in another thread that you have to look for a little clip to take the end off and I am looking for confirmation that the clip in the pic is indeed what needs to be removed to get the end off? Does that allow the joint to slide out to the wheel side? Is that what is going on here? This is a pic of the outer joint (wheel side) Any help removing or advice other than removing this thing to put a new boot on there would be greatly appreciated.

Generally it’s not a good idea to mess with the outside cv joint. I would recommend taking apart the inner joint and replacing the boot from that side. The inner joint doesn’t have that clip so the shaft will easily slide out/ back in.

Welp unfortunately i guess i took the not so easy was if you are classifying it that way. I attacked the wheel side. I only tackled it this way because i could not get the shaft to budge from the inner side. I do have to say once I actually figured out how to get the the clip to come off it was actually a piece of cake aside from cleaning the grease out of it. The key was to make sure the little clip is in the middle of the window and then spread. The CV literally dropped off. Oh yeah and the right tool for the job (for me at least) was a tiny pair of super thin needle nose pliers. So after pissing and moaning for awhile I finally figured it out. Do i want to do it again…NNNope. Could I do it again in ten minutes if i had to…yyyyyup. I mean that is if everything else around it is disassembled. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and help out. The cart was a little restoration project for my daughter but I have to say I have kinda taken a liking to the little thing and tinkering with it. Obviously this is my first and there is much to learn so hopefully there are still some people floating around the forum here willing to help out. Next problem is a quick discharge situation :frowning:

Thanks again
Joe

That snap ring just creates a pressure fit. You can pound the joint off of the shaft with a rubber hammer. The best method would be to remove the entire half shaft and chuck in a vice . This way you can get plenty of grease in it as well.
