Hey there! I’m from Ontario. There are actually alot of EV owners in Ontario, I just don’t know if they are on here or not. check out evalbum to see if you can find more. I know there is a club in Durham Region, and if you have seen the Forkenswift videos on youtube, he is from Ontario, just near Kingston. I currently live in Toronto but am doing my conversion out near Woodstock. There is a EV jeep (he calles it the EV2 on youtube) and he is out in Ingersol. Are you planning a conversion?

Does anybody know a cheap Ontario source for parts? I put an ad on kijiji but we haven’t gotten any responses.
right now the canadian dollar is bassically par with the amarican dollar so i’d say shop around, evsource.com has some good stuff, canev.com is in vancouver and they sell kits for specific cars, maybe check into that. some things you can pick up from your local NAPA store…but your specific ev parts need to be bought from an ev company. but batteries, cabels and conectors, the NAPA in ingersol found batteries for that EV2 jeep i mentioned. it really all depends on what you want to get out of the car…with gas prices the way they are (and will continue to rise) i’d say go all the way. you can try and get some used fork lift parts, use the motor and controllers, pot box… the rout i’m taking…i am going to be useing a zilla motor controller, and pretty sure lionev lithium batteries. by the time you and your son finish your project, the price for lithium might be even cheaper by then.
I am in ontario as well. Brampton to be exact. I am thinking of building a EV car as well, but instead of doing a conversion, I am planning on doing a custom EV car. Don’t laugh, I work at a metal shop dealing with aluminum alot, and am a custom fabricator as well. My plan is to build a small daily driving EV car, with a light chassis that is custom made to save on weight (because gas powered cars are too heavy and wastefull) and a custom fibreglass body, I would use carbon fibre, but that ain’t cheap.

I am also from Ontario , Kenora to be exact. about 35 miles from the Manitoba border. I am just in the research stages right now. I want to convert a gasser to electric but I still have a lot of research to do. I really want to do an electric but I am not sure it will be doable with the rough terrain and bad climate in this area. so I will be doing lots of reading and research for now.
coppertop you might want to look into if you’d be able to get a custom car certified and what it would take. i’ve seen some pretty crazy kits but normaly they register and insure it as whatever it was originally. my suggestion is to get an old beat up destryoyed fiero, or a saturn SC1 or 2. take off the detachable body panels and rip the car down to the bare bones, replicate that, then rebuild it with the original parts or parts you fabricate. so yes your car would be custom, but would also look like other cars on the road (might not be what you want) but then you have a car that is half the weight of the original that other people will be driving.

There are people doing them quietly, on their own, almost in secret, and a few doing them fairly openly, but - the old story - it’s who you know…!

Hello. Just joined this forum. I went to a Durham Electric Vehicle Assn. meeting last week and there was about 50 people there from Durham, York and the GTA there, they were all very interested in EV’s.
I’m from Whitby and plan on converting a VW Golf in the spring when I can use my motorcycle as transportation

I live north of Kitchener and have been playing with this stuff for 20 years ,I have 2 electric cars ,a Marden E Space 1 and a Citicar which is on the road.there are lots of new rules in Ontario when it comes to converting and if you want that E on your ownership you must follow them.I would check with MTO before investing a lot of money in the conversion ,the most inexpensive way to get on the road is to find a older factory EV and restore it .
You are perfectly right. The MTO do not help the car/truck conversions hobbiest.
Any how, you can convert a vehicle and get it licenced if you follow the procedure.
They have limited the number of offices where you can get the licence plates:

Also, they do not allow the converted EV to have a Green Plate.

The most important is that your EV converted to electricity is build to the SEA standards, Electric codes of Ontario and that you pass safety check through a licenced garage.

Also consider your local Forklift Sales and Service Depot - there is one in Toronto North of finch and one light West of Dufferin, going north from Finch about 1/2 block, west side. Can’t remember the name right now - and can’t include a link - so hope you find it!
