86 Ranger EV

I’d love to know how much $$$ you have in it at this point. I plan on doing the same conversion and going through EV-America. I’m anxious to get started.

I have a little over 10k into it now including the price of the truck. I will probably have a little over 11k after i get it painted.

hey this is looking great.

You havn’t taken her for any test drives yet - have you?

I’m looking at using 16 Trojan T-105’s for a 96v system.

Little less than yours, what are you getting for top speeds and millage?

I havnt driven it yet but will fairly soon. so I’m not sure on the range and top speed yet. It should do pretty good speed wise but I’m after range. I’m hoping to get 50 to 55 for speed which shouldnt be a problem however I want to get 40 miles without draining my batts past 40% so we shall see. I can charge at work if I have to but prefer not to.

as long as i can pass the speed limits here (45) and go at LEAST 20 MILES preferably 30, I would be happy.

I have my project complete and am ready for road tests. I went to DMV today and guess what. The guy that I bought the donar from signed in wrong line and now DMV tells me they have no problem with changing the fuel type but in order to do the title change I will need a bill of sale from the guy even though he crossed it off and then signed it in the right spot. Oh man. So I tried to get ahold of him to no avail. So now I have to submit another form to have the line removed and that will be a 4 week waiting period. Then I can do the title change. What a pain… and the line he signed in is really only that says “I am aware of the above odometer disclosure made by the seller/agent.” LOL who cares. Now I can only legally drive in my driveway. That will be fun!!

Well I will get it squared away in a month or so but the good news is it works so… late at night… small pickup sneaking around in stealth mode…for no apparent reason with a guy in it just a grinnin…

Dang, that SUCKS.

I’m sorry. ;( Glad to see that you’re finished though.

Hi,
Got the title problem straightened out and got them to list it on registration as electric for fuel type. WooHoo!! got to get my first ev miles took it for a spin around town. LOL this is a small logging town in NW and people havnt seen an electric rig before. They look lol and look again and watch you all the way out of site. What fun. Went 45 without a problem and drove it my first 8 ev miles to do a little test run. Climbed pretty steep grade in town in 2nd gear no problem. I’m very impressed and this is way cool. You guys need to do this.

Will be back in touch soon gotta go for now but I had to post this is so fun.

Took the truck for another drive today this time it was 12 miles 4 more than yesterday and did real well. Some serious hills and still 60% on fool gauge. Really impressed. Gonna do 20 tomorrow. I got some more pics for those that want to see.

Greased wheel bearings and fixed some minor rattles but still got to do shocks, paint and some interior work.

But its running and starting to go smoothly. Top speed today was 48 but that was because of windy mountain backroads so I really couldnt go any faster. Tomorrow gonna do highway and see what top speed is

Took her out on highway and did 18 miles today. Did 55 which was pretty much topped out. For 3rd cycle on batts not bad at all. Came back with 1/2 tank on fool gauge. Still having problems with charger not reading pack quite right so I am timing my charges for now and getting the pack up to 152.6 which is full charge or close to it. I guess it is common for chargers not to read battery pack for first 4 or 5 charges. I will be keeping an eye on it none the less.

Also I am having difficulties with my ammeter. I think I let the magic blue smoke out by wiring it up wrong. I had the shunt wired to B+ side of controller instead of load side. Woops!! So I am ordering a new one and its awhile out.

All in all I’m happy with progress. A few more times and I will be very near my target range of 40 miles. With only 3 cycles on batteries I’m pretty confident I will make it.

Great reports! Thanks for sharing.

Good deal!

What exactly is a shunt used for?

http://cloudelectric.com/shunts

Does it aid the ammeter to read ampers?

Ok let me explain the story first. I was going to use the truck for my first work day and it starts off with a 15 mile run to pick up a buddy I work with. I drive 7 miles out of town to pick up a friend I work with and drive 7 miles back to go to work. Now I did this run last Saturday to check out how it would do. 5 miles each way of this run is done at 55 mph the rest is done at 45mph and lower. Last Saturday I did it with 6 tenths of my fool gauge left. My start voltage was 152.6 . Well today my start voltage was 148.2 When I got back to town I had to swing by home and change cars because my truck was getting tired allready. When I came home for lunch 4 hrs later my pack voltage read 144.0 Now mind you my fool gauge still read full.

The leason I learned here is batteries are not full till the voltmeter tells me so LOL. Basically when I thought I was full I was allready down 14 miles and the second 14 miles told me I was really getting close to empty. So thus the name fool gauge lol. I am going to charge it to capacity by the voltmeter tonight and see if I am right after clocking 30 miles on it tommorrow. It should be about 144v when I am finished. If I am right then I will expend about 4 volts of power for every 15 miles travelled as long as it on the same path.

If this is true then I will be able to reach my 40 mile per charge goal without draining my batts down past 30 to 40 percent. I love it when a plan comes together. I will keep you posted.

Interesting and informative Ragee, thanks for sharing! I can’t wait to get my conversion underway.

Ben

Woops,
I let all the magic blue smoke out of my Ammeter. Does anybody know where to get a new one? Mine is a 0-400 amps. I would appreciate any help with this as mine has been broken from the get-go and am having troubles locating a new one. It is really hard to see the effiency of the motor without one.

Thanks,

Got 180 ev miles now and am getting all the bugs worked out. Having issues with the charger but getting it figured out now I needed to upgrade my wiring from my panel to my outlet to 10 gauge wire. Now that thats done it is charging fine on its own now. Seems when you are charging 144v from a 120v outlet it want to create some heat which in turn losses most of your gain in loss of amps. I am upgrading to a 240v charger because even for work I need to do errands some times and need a quick charge so I can do these errands. If I do that they told me to just plug into one of the many welder outlets and you can have the power. Good deal for both of us as these errands usually only consist of a couple miles of travel between buildings.

My top speed so far is 60mph and my maximum range so far is about 25miles and thats around 50% DOD. I am hoping to get the range up around 10 miles when batts and brushes get more broke in.:D:D

I have 300 ev miles on it now and had my first problem. I was doing the last leg of my commute which was dropping a friend off about 7 miles from home. I dropped him off and pulled back out on the highway and lost my pack power. So as soon as I felt the motor quit I pulled off on the shoulder by coasting. With the help of the guy I droped off we pushed it back into his driveway and I popped the hood. Put a Multimeter on 1 and 24 battery and 0. Hmmm. I found the problem in the back battery pack with a cable that came out of a lug. Them Damned guys didnt get the lug on right. Oh wait a minute that is me. I guess from now on when the truck breaks down I can only point at myself LOL. Dunno if I like that concept.

Anyways the rig is really running fine. The batteries seem to be building up rather nicely. I am getting 60mph comfortably and about a 35 mile range. It handles much nicer since I put spring over shocks on rear and new heavy duty on front.

Just thought I would add an update.

Great posts, ragee, very informative, especially since I am hoping to do a small truck . Any chance you might have a website soon with detailed step by step conversion? Would really be useful to all!

X2 on the website. I also have a small truck I’d like to do once the capital is there.

Ragee,

I’ll offer some space on my site in a blog format if you need it.

Ok I will do it but you guys gotta give me a little time. I am very busy with work and putting up some solar panels for my house. I have space with my IP and I will try and get something up in the next few weeks. It will be fairly plane but I have been wanting to do it anyways.
