Lithium Conversion

oops… think it got away from me… just kidding saw this car up for auction… $25

Bob

thanks David

Bob

Fake Book ummm NO THANKS. Have fun

are you going to start a thread on here for your lithium conversion ?

no… I’ll invite the group to the forum… if they are interested I guess they will come…

Bob

Why go to face book…? Why not keep it right here. If Its not broke why try to fix it somewhere else… or move it?

I hate to admit it because “Racal” is a POS old “F” but he is right

I have the two seater with the batteries in the front and was wondering why you didn’t put the Lithium batteries there instead of under the seat to keep some weight forward. On mine, if I have to go up a steep hill and with the front wheel drive, I have almost no traction now and I can only imagine how it would be with no weight over the drive wheels. Also, did I miss the cost of the lithium batteries? I had thought of doing the same conversion but my investigation was about 5 years ago and it was so expensive that I gave up on it.

I’m interested, but would prefer to see it here.

if u have a model with 2batteries upfront I would highly recommend trying to put the batteries up front . when u remove the 2 front batteries it changes the ride height and screws up your suspension . the leaf lithiums weigh only 89lbs so even with them up there it still might not be enough . gwest here on the forumn well sell u a complete lithium pack for the same cost as a set of gels .

Grant… do you have a BMS on your pack? what kind is it? what kind of range and speed can you get out of a full charge? what did you have to do to your Delta Q? are you selling a setup??

Bob

nosing around I found a guy who converted a Fiat from an ICE to electric… he built a gauge cluster for his dash, think it would look neat on a GEM car…

Grant can correct me if needed. I follow his projects pretty close.
He does not use bms. He uses a voltage monitor connected to bms port to keep an eye on things.
He has reported that cells stay in balance well.
Uses 20s leaf.
DQ can be modified for Li-ion. Once done it has profiles up to 24s, which I use.

He has a good connection for Leaf batteries, and may even do some of the work wiring the pack into a kit.

My Volts are a little smaller. 47ah. I only drive 15m in hilly area before charging. I would say 20m is max for me.
He may have some mileage information in this thread.
Remember, there is room to double up packs.
I even have an extra set on the shelf, but don’t need them.

15m is plenty for my short trips. Charging enough for a few more miles only takes an hour. Plus it doesn’t need complete charge cycles like lead.

thanks Dave… I really want to extend my range to way more than 15 miles… more like 40 miles 20 in one direction and 20 back… do you have to make a controller change? my car is an 05 with a stock controller… also I have changed my motor to one of Marlon’s 9.6… it has been rebuilt but have no idea what hp it is now… doesn’t have the horses the 9.6 had… could be that my batteries are showing age… charge to 13.2 but the range is only about 18 miles at this time… I do find myself riding along closer to 30 mph than 25 mph… and Denver does have hills

Bob

Grant has run his long enough to get you some good information. My feeling is that you would need at least 2 sets of 40-60ah to get 40m.
Not a problem, just more $$.

New gels in my EL only give me 15M before it gets down to 40%. Maybe others run lower than me, or have fewer hills.

Have any of you guys, contemplating a lithium conversion, considered evbatterycenter.com? They have a leaf battery pack with a 20 cell BMS installed on it.

It’s still a kit. Not a drop in.
I think you can do better buying the parts.

I do not have a lot of time before I need this cart up and running (6 weeks) as I will be traveling and taking the cart with me. I’m at a point where I need to replace all the batteries and I thought that I would look into switching to lithium, after I talked with Dave. I have put together a quick guess-tamate of component cost, do you think that I’m close? What other components might I need?

leaf modules are $125 x 10 = $1250 on eBay, I do not have a DQ battery charger so I would have to buy one and have it modified: ~ $350 + $50 modification.

Batteries 64Ah $1250
charger $ 400
BMS $ 100
buss bars & wire $ ?
shipping $ 228
$1978

components from EV Battery Center

battery modules 60Ah
& BMS $1780
charger $ 225
shipping $ 200
$2205

Check this out. 68ah pack
