I have a 48vdc motor with the terminals labled- S1, S2, A1, A2. I was wanting to find out how to wire it direct to the batteries so I can test it out to see if it works. I don’t have my controller yet, just would like to know it this motor works first. I plan on testing it with either 12 or 24 volts to try it out.

Just hook it up in series. The s leads are your field and the A’s are your armature leads.
You might want to try doing a little google-fu on motors before you start messing with it any.
