2008 Gem battery

Hi, I’m new to this forum. I’ve been reading your stuff for a while though.
I have been through some old stuff, but I can’t find any mention of the height of the
battery area for an e6. Specifically a 2008 with the short utility bed in back.
I found the width and depth, but how tall is the question. I’m considering the Rhino 76vX170ah
unit. It is 18 inches tall.
Does anyone have experience with their products ?
Thanks, Lambo

Hey Lambo- Welcome to the group

I’m confused by this question.
Should I guess that you do not have this car yet?
-or-
You do not have access to it at the moment and cannot measure it yourself?

I think you will have trouble attempting to fit that 170ah battery. There is not enough free space to fit a cube battery with these dimensions into a Gem.
Your battery:

  • Length: 21 inches
  • Width: 17.9 inches
  • Height: 12.6 inches

The car:

The 08 e2/e4 short bed have the same basic battery layout
4 lengthwise across under rear seat, then 2 more on a tray sticking out under the rear fender/spat. I believe the e6 has the same frame dimensions, but the batteries are laid out a bit different.

  • The 4 across under the rear seat are split up as 2 in a center well and 2 outboard wing batteries because of a diagonal frame support for the back wall and rear bed support.

  • Top height is limited due to the cross brace for the seat.

  • The center and rear battery wells are separated by the frame cross brace.

I was afraid of the height being an issue.
I have had the gem for several years. It lives in SRB Florida,
but I’m in Wisconsin. I have been considering the ride4fun battery, but its only 100ah.
I spoke with Bob, and he is looking into having more cells put into the same case to give more range. What do you all think. Thanks for the reply.

So, you’re looking to increase the cargo to the 2nd heaviest frame and #1 land slug that gem ever built and R$F wants to sell you a 100Ah battery for a DC motor? That he may be able to upgrade to slightly larger capacity?

That itty-bitty battery will get you probably 6 miles, maybe. Thats if you dont smoke the thing on the first hard launch…

Bob at R$F is not a bad person, but hes just a reseller with a 100%+ markup. Batteries are out of his league. Your e6 doubly so…

And you live in Wisconsin and Florida…

@Lambo … I’d like to introduce you to two guys here, Dave @Inwo and Mike @LithiumGods . They pioneered lithium power packs and AC conversions for Gems. Ones in WI, ones in FL.

They know their shyt and wont steer you wrong.

Mikes e6 a long distance land rocket could be considered proof of this…

I was afraid of the height being an issue.

Welcome to the struggles of custom battery design.
I thought I’d point out that not only does that battery have an issue with height, but (according to my quick measure skills), this battery won’t fit anywhere lengthwise or even width.

I have been considering the ride4fun battery, but its only 100ah.

I I’m curious as to what you are using for a baseline when you say “only 100ah”?

  • How is this car going to be used?
  • What kind of range are you going to need?

he is looking into having more cells put into the same case to give more range.

That is going to be a neat trick. I believe he is already maxxed out with the current design.

Get a battery that is tested in Gem from a Gem battery guru. @LithiumGods . He only does one client at a time.
If Michael does not have anything, the original Goliath is avIlable for a custom build.
234ah 88 volts for high performance.

@Lambo, are you near me? I can help you out. 55941

Thanks for all your insights.
You are correct about the size specs. I just immediately thought "that battery is probably too tall " for that location, but I couldn’t measure the spot.
In speaking with Bob at ride 4 fun he said that the 100ah pack would give a slight range increase.
But he downplayed that as a benefit.
My interest is a battery setup that will give @40+miles range and last for 8-10 years.
Any performance increase would be a welcome bonus. At this point it will cruise at 35.

Hi Dave, I see you are just over the border in Mn.

I’m on the east side of wisconsin …Racine.

Would your Goliath fit in an e6 ?

Dave can set you up. I also have a Demo 210ah battery that drops in to an E6 between the frame rails. Dave’s would have better performance with the higher voltage. Both will hit your goal. Install available

the 100ah pack would give a slight range increase.
But he downplayed that as a benefit.

Ah! You sensed there was an asterisk in this statement, but he didn’t expand on it.

What that probably meant was- *When used on a stock cart, in a normal way, in a normal environment

But where is the fun in that?!?!

  • More speed is one of the first upgrades. You already say your cart will do 35mph(so you have done a speed mod). If you spend much time racing around with pedal mashed to the floor, it will cut the range of ANY battery in half. You probably already noticed this change in range at the cost of hot dogging around.

  • Pulling any kind of hills getting to your destination will also ask huge demands from your power reserves.

  • This (being an e6 project) has the potential of loading up 6 people(adults?) in the car. Throw any sort of economy plans out the window.

If you want/need 40+ miles of range, any of these three things is enough to consider something bigger than 100ah.

It is good that you wandered in here before you bought something that would not work to your needs.

What is being suggested here is also going to bump up the voltage. The legacy guys figured out these cars respond well to higher voltage. This increases the performance quite a bit. (you thought your car was fun to drive now?).

If this is sounding like the direction you want to go, there are a few things we need to know.

  • What is your skill set?
  • Are you OK with a DIY install?
  • How good are you at following instructions?
  • What is in your toolbox?

Next question is-> How big is your budget?

Not a chance in hell thst battery will give an e6 40 miles especially at 30mph.

Do you still have the stock 14.76:1 diff in there?

You can get to a total of 100Ah many ways….

Some of them won’t pass the loud pedal test…

I don’t have id.4 here. If easy install send to client. If not, I can help out here. It’s a long drive.

I don’t have anything on the shelf except a mighty mite.

Meaning me? Or do you have something else going on?

I am not always available for installation. I would partner on this one.

i could here, didn’t mean to imply you could

3.5 hrs from me. Not exactly local, I guess. :frowning:

I am generally pretty handy, but have very limited experience with working on a gem. I have replaced the battery pack on my john deere electric gator.

I think I could probably do the install , as long as I had some guidance.

its not hard. let me see if I can find a picture

I’m not in a hurry. I won’t be going there until early October. What are my options ?

Thanks

I am also looking for a lithium battery(s) for my 2013 E6.

Would love a much bigger battery, have (9) 8 volt batteries now.

Have another 4 seater cart with a Lithium Gods Samsung currently. Like the JK BMS, would like to do same setup, but maybe something a little bigger than the 110aH for the 6 seater.

What options are out there?
