Useless Driveway Ornament

My 2011 eLXD is now a useless driveway ornament. It worked fine one evening, then not even a screen display the next morning. The batteries seem to be ok–putting out around 80 volts. A Polaris tech came out yesterday. He says the PSDM is shot and i need to replace it. Does anyone have any other ideas? Are these things repairable? Polaris wants to charge me $1,300 for the new PSDM. Amazon has one that looks exactly like it for $850 but the sticker has a different model number, so i don’t know if i should risk that. Doesn’t seem like anybody else has one on the internet. There goes every penny i’ve saved from not buying $4.50 gas this year.

I find this hard to believe. Were you watching this Tech and saw what he was doing? Was this right before quitting time yesterday?

How much electrical do you know?
Do you have a meter?

PSDMs can be repaired if you can troubleshoot a circuit board

Sounds like a classic DC/DC converter failure… From the very little information that we currently have.

Ah AssyRequired and jrjava. I knew you guys would be on it.

I worked closely with the tech yesterday morning and watched everything he did. He did not seem to be a GEM Jedi master, but more knowledgeable than me. I know a bit of electrical but not a lot. I don’t know how to troubleshoot a circuit board. I do have a multimeter. I know there is some voltage coming out of some of the ports, but not all of them and they seem to be all over the place.

The DC/DC conversion happens in the PSDM in this vehicle, no?

No- I believe the DC converter is in your DQ Charger. I don’t remember when it was moved into there but we can check.

I do have a DQ charger, but the problem seems to be upstream of that. There is no voltage getting to anything at the front end. The cables going to the controller, the charger, and the motor are all at 0V.

In other words, the voltage going into the PSDM is 79V. The voltage coming out of the PSDM is 0V.

To avoid excess noise on the list, we can go PM. Anybody else want in?

Sure, please loop my dead ass in too please. Maybe I’ll think of something useful to say besides bad jokes.

I do feel that some things should stay out here, maybe as a synopsis when it’s all done since board component troubleshooting highly situational.

Yep. High on the list. 72v no workie widout da twelve-ie

Correct. (Prior modifications possibly exempted)

I think 2009 was the last of the separate DC-DC in the 72v gems. My '10 does DC-DC through the DQ.

Yeah, that’s the quandry.

Can’t get 12 without 72, but can’t turn on 72 without 12.

I have used PSDM’s $550

In case any of you were on the edge of your seat waiting for results,

Somehow in the process of unplugging an accessory wire off the PSDM to probe for 12v power the car lit up again and started working. It is possible there was a bad pin connection in J1 or J2.

CPete is still doing a bit of diagnostics/ maybe even a pull and reseat of PSDM power plugs looking for odd clues, but I think he is happy he doesn’t need to find another PSDM.

Thanks for stepping up with the offer LG.

I didn’t mean to be rude by going PM, but I saved the group 64 posts of basic diagnostic chatter but there was some odd cheese chatter and something about a cowboy on a white horse passing by that might have also fixed it.

Yea, that’s ■■■■■ isn’t it… lol

So the sudden shutdown thing has started happening again. It started a few weeks ago, so I took apart everything under the dashboard looking for any signs of damage, burning, corrosion, etc. Nothing. Shockingly for a 12 year old vehicle, everything looked like it was in mint condition. I reassembled everything and it started working like new again.

The GEM ran just fine for a few weeks, the. This morning it shut down going uphill a block away from home.

All the same symptoms as before. No power to anything. No lights, no warning beeps, nothing. Anybody have any ideas on what could be causing this?

K- let me go see if I can find that PM conversation again and review what we were looking at back then. It might provide a clue as to where to look/not look.

What is current status of car at this moment?
Dark/Not active/No power?
Dash removed?
When do you have time to go do some diagnostic probing?

I went to the job all morning, then walked back to it and it started right up like nothing was wrong. I moved it to the shady spot on a level street where I like to work on it. It will wait for me there until I have time to work on it. The problem is, if the damn thing is back to life again, the diagnostics won’t work, but it is also not safe to drive. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:
