That moment, that oh shyt moment
Generally if you are riding a motorcycle & have that moment, you are about crash, something you were not prepared for happened & how bad you over react determines if/how bad you crash
My GEM started leaking some oil from the transmission.
I finally get off my butt & started to change the oil. Trying to work around the motor sucks. So I remove the wires & unbolt the motor. Stuck, start working screwdrivers into the gap, wiggle, pry wiggle. Then that sinking feeling when the rotor stays engaged, oh shyt. The bearing has to stay in the housing, being bolted in, the encoder ring[magnets] isn’t & doesn’t. The sickening sound of the brushes slipping off the commutator with a clap…
Actually as dc motors go the GE is reasonably done:
Easy to remove brush housing, with quick remove cover
Nice brush set up, with the spring able to rest on the sides of the brushes until you are ready to release them
The holders angled for maximum surface area & a loose fit
Quality machining on the rotor, fits just so in the bearing
All went back together with a few taps of a big hammer & my trusty 1" square aluminum drift punch & broom stick for the encoder ring
Dab of never sieze on the splines & bolts
The gearbox had a bit more than 1/2 the oil, looked like motor oil
Refilled with around a liter of 1/2 90# & 1/2 lucas sticky oil
The leak seems to be where the 1/2 shafts go in. If it were easier to access, I would pop in some new seals, packing the seal with some waterproof wheel bearing grease.
If I ever was to pull the gearbox, I would punch a 1/2" npt hole in the front of the gearbox to ease checking the level or change.
My plan is see how bad it leaks with thicker oil, it’s not falling out after a day 
I might have to go talk to the dealer, which is a local toyota forklift dealer about repair/replace
The local Club Car dealer said they would work on GEMs as long as they bought the parts
My back doesn’t like a bunch of hunched over work & my apartment hoa frowns on “auto repair”, I’ve done some repairs & lithium swap without too much feedback, by working at night or weekends when the bosses aren’t around.
I should conserve my indiscretions in case I need them in the future
