Hi @RS_E6 I’m in Pines, just got a 06 e4 and it needs some TLC. I’m also looking to replace my steering wheel. I can’t figure out how to remove it… any idea?
@Amesco57 I’m not familiar with that style wheel but from the photo I can venture a guess. From the photo it looks like you need a specific tool that fits in the two small holes on either side of the threaded rod allowing you to unscrew that nut. Once the nut is removed the wheel should pull off but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was stuck on there tight and you’ll need something like a pulley puller to get it off. I had to fight with mine for a bit.
A tool like this is what I’m referring to (I have no idea if this item would work for your application): Amazon.com
Others on here should be familiar with that style steering wheel to confirm, hopefully they will chime in.
Wow thank you!!! Any idea why this one would be different from other gems? I love the look of these but damn it I’m finding it is so hard to replace parts etc.
The battery on mine also always is on 1 red bar even when I charge all day and it will drive for quite a long time. I have Deka gel batteries. Any posts you can refer me to? As I’m looking here I see you’re the man with all the answers
@Amesco57 - What year is your car?
Welcome to the new guy.
Tip- If you have not yet discovered them yet, To learn more about your car, feel free to explore the archives attached in this forum. Use the magnifying glass tool at the upper right of this page.
That steering wheel is really odd. I have not seen one like that either. I have no idea where that came from or why a person would put that on. (Possibly a junkyard salvage from another cart?) Are there any markings on the center section that might be a clue to where it came from?
Q- Was there a nut on that spindle? If No, There is a chance that center disc is the nut and you will need some sort of pin spanner to get it off. (much like the one RS has suggested).
Are those little holes threaded? They might also be part of how this wheel comes off. It might be simply pressed on and someone did not put on the retaining nut. The strange marks look like someone pounded the cr@p out of it when they originally installed this wheel.
What tools do you have in your garage?
Is there a gap between the wheel and the column?
The original tool used to remove the wheel looked like this:
The two long studs went through a couple of holes in the wheel and attached to a plate slid in between the gap. Something like this tool should work, but you will need to drill the holes through your wheel. IMO- this tool it awkward as there is no way to thread the bolts UPWARDS into the puller plate unless it clears the steering column. It is far easier to thread a bolt down into a threaded hole in a base plate.
Battery bars -
This is difficult to guess without exploring your charging system a bit more. The State of Charge bars on your dash need two things to happen to count back up.
- The interlock needs to be set when charging.
- The charge current must be placed on the correct side of the shunt(current register) for it to see the current flow when charging.
Q1. What charger is installed in this car?
Verify that it is wired into this car correctly.
-
When plugged in to charge, Verify that it is truly charging via the CHARGER display. Normally, this is viewed from the driver side if you look over the top of the tire and past the shock/spring. It is mounted under the shelf the motor controller rests on.
-
When plugged in to charge, a partial dash will light up, the interlock light should appear on the dash(small yellow plug), and the car should NOT drive.
-
the battery bars might animate in a little chase pattern. (depending on what software is flashed in the display)
