Slow with Temp Light

I think you misunderstand how the temp light circuit works. The motor temp sensor is a Normally Closed switch that opens on Temperature Rise. When motor is hot, the switch opens, the light signals you on the dash, and the controller hobbles your speed. If the temp switch is disconnected, the controller thinks the motor is hot. If you close the loop (by jumping the two wire plug) and the light goes out, then the entire circuit from the little plug to the controller is working as is intended. The controller is fine.

What you should be asking yourself is what is missing with the loop in the other direction. Does your motor have a temp sensor? Have you checked it to see if it is closed? Depending on what motor you are using, it may not even be wired up with one, hence the need to jump the harness connector.

I have lost the “Tesla” style of regen braking though….I would like to understand what could’ve caused that to suddenly start working after I cleaned the 23 pin connector……and I would like to have that back if possible…

This statement is confusing. It sounds like you did NOT have it, then you cleaned the connector and suddenly got it? But now that you changed the speed sensor you no longer have it?

First, We may need to clarify what/when are you observing as regen braking? It is a complicated answer and difficult to say without knowing more about what was happening at the time you observed the braking/regen events. First guess is that I suspect it had much to do with the flaky speed sensor.

  • What were you doing when you observed this event?
  • When exactly/What did you do in between that made you lose it?
    Replaced magnet/sensor? This might have something to do with it.
    Q- Is you speed now registering correct? (compared to GPS?)

Know that these cars are not exactly set up for “one foot driving” like a Tesla. I don’t pretend to know it all, but there are several tricks the controller does to enhance your drive experience in the name of efficiency and safety.

  • Anti-roll-away. Sort of a hill hold/electric parking brake. Intended to keep your car in place when you exit your car to go swat at little white balls.
  • Plug braking - Low speed engine brake. It takes energy created by the motor and directs it back into the motor to slow it down. Kinda like throwing it in reverse or like a jake brake in a diesel truck. It is really hard on the motor and generates a lot of heat. Most people turn it off for this reason.
  • Regen - This directs energy generated by the motor back into the battery.

The relationship of all three are related to each other in a complex mix of detected speed, pedal inputs, and several settings deep in the controller programming. Once you start messing with any of the inputs, it is generally accepted that the pedal up braking gets messed up.

The tricky bit is identifying what you are feeling without having additional sensors wired into your car. I’m playing around with that now. I thought I had shut down PB, but last test run shows it is still active. I can watch my controller switch from PB to Regen on screen and it feels the same when coasting down hills.

This car has the IWI 11 HP Motor in it, and does have a temp sensor.

I checked the temp sensor and it is “open” (no continuity), so I will order a new one if possible.

After reading your comments on regen braking vs other types of braking I am unsure of what type of braking I would be getting, but for this conversation I will call it regen braking until I can figure out if it is something else…

I have 2024 Club Car Carryall 710LSV cart that has the regen braking, and what I felt on the GEM car was exaclty/very similar to what the Club Car does when pedal up.

I purchased this GEM car in a non working condition, so I don’t know for sure if it had the original capability/programming of “regen braking”…I went through the troubleshooting guide of the service manual and determined that the controller had a problem, so I sent it off to be rebuilt by FSIP. When I got the controller back and installed, I took the cart out for a test drive and had no discernable “regen braking”.

I haven’t had any “regen braking” until after cleaning the 23 pin connector, with the old speed sensor and magnet.

After I cleaned the connector I took the car out for a test drive to see if there was any change in condition and I got the “regen braking” for the first time when I went pedal up when coming to a stop sign and doing about 8-10 mph…

During this test drive I would get the “regen braking” almost every time I went pedal up at almost any speed, but after about a mile I started getting the 81 and 82 error codes again.

I got back to the shop and inspected the speed sensor and magnet for any damage, cracks , or anything obvious, but couldn’t see anything…

After reading some posts about issues with the speed sensors, I decided to just replace the speed sensor and magnet and see if that would fix the 81 and 82 error codes… It did, but I haven’t had any “regen braking” since I have replaced it.

I have checked the registered speed both before and after installing the new speed sensor with GPS and it is the same as it was before replacing parts.

The car is a little faster (about 4mph) than the registered speed on the speedometer, and I think this is due to the 14" rims with slightly oversized radial tires on this car.

I did go for another drive this morning and I put my meter on the B- coble to see what kind of draw there was and to observe if there was any regen when I went pedal up…I observed up to about 250A going out, but very little (less than 20A…sometimes nothing) regen at either high or low speed pedal up.

This might not be any help. Newer cars after 2022 have pedal up regen. My 2016 did not until it did. It turns out I had a bad brake light switch that kept the brake lights on all the time. Whenever I let go the throttle the car thought I had the brakes on so it would regen as it normally did when actually using brakes.

It’s almost as good as a stack of 8x10 color glossy photos with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back.
