Rack and Pinion Blow Out (2002 eE825)

Hello all,

The kids were out cruising the neighborhood and the “steering just stopped working”. Anyhow after a quick look the steering column had pulled out of the rack and pinion with the inside of the rack and pinion still attached. The grease is full of ball Barings and bits of metal so it looks like its time for another rack and pinion. Can I get some thoughts on where to acquire a new one? are there other replacement options available?

Any tips on replacing and adjusting the R&P ?

Thanks,
Gerald

Try looking at golf cart or side by side steering racks, look them up and compare to see if they are similar. Some modification may be needed but chances are these are generic off the shelf parts and a direct replacement can be found

Thanks. I’ll reach out to them to see what they have available.

That’s a thought If I can get something that will bolt up. I’ll keep that in the back pocket. Thanks

Btw, when you are in there, check all the steering column supports at the dash. There is a single 1" weld on a sheet metal bracket that supports the entire steering column.

It gets damaged by people hanging on to the wheel getting in and out of the car and when they hit bumps. If your gem hit enough bumps to blow the rack.apart, that bracket may be next.

If it fails you will find the steering column in your lap and with 2 u joints in it, its difficult to control

Thanks, I’ll take a look at that while I’m replacing the rack. I’ve ordered a refurbed rack from here. Hope it goes smoothly. :crossed_fingers:
