Actually the crown nut didn’t move, but the entire wheel/caliper and axel did. It’s a 2008 E2 GEM, wheel wobble on driver’s front wheel (again). Seriously loose with about an inch of play at top and bottom. Pulled off wheel and caliper, cleaned, greased, torqued and tightened the crown nut. Blue Locktight and a new cotter key added. ‘All Good’, just like the time before. Why does it loosen. The Crown nut doesn’t move. I did replace the wheel bearings in the hub. Perhaps they were not pressed ‘home’ and are migrating outward? Bearings came from NEV. ‘Don’t look at them, look at me”, but what could it be?
Check the cast aluminum hub, see if its cracked.
Also, torque settings are dry thread.
Thanks JJ. Hub is steel. Followed your suggestion and dry thread torqued. The ‘sealed bearings’ I got came apart in my hands before installation. Question there somewhere. For now it’s an easy to monitor thing I’ll keep checking. Next step probably is to re-replace the wheel bearings (half shaft carrier bearings) and after cleaning and inspection next time I’m in there. For now it looks good. Again!
I may have been thinking of a different year or an aftermarket replacemt when i thought of the aluminum parts.
Are these the double row bearings? My 10 had those. I recall lots of internal clearance.
Fwiw, unless indicated otherwise, tightning torque values are always dry thread.
