How practical is it to replace brushes

I have 2015 gem with factory Advanced Motors and Drives motor. I wanted to check if the brushes are sticking. Some I can nudge slightly with a screwdriver and they’ll move. Most will not mainly because if I touch them they crumble.

Can these be replaced? They look accessible in the cart the way they are albeit the back and bottom a little more difficult. One 8mm bolt and getting around the spring.

Yes, they can be replaced.

You may not need to though depending on condition. The AMDs have very tight clearances and are known for the brushes sticking in the holders. A good careful cleaning where you don’t forget the corners of the holders may suffice.

Thanks for that. I ended up replacing with a r4f.

To expand on this a bit more, it also depends on your skill set and what is in your toolbox.

Sometimes these brushes come out with barely a wiggle. a quick brush off, a blow out with compressed air, put it all back together and you are good for another year.

Other times these things can be VERY stuck. If you break one getting it out, you need to source parts.

From the pic you provided, it looks like yours might need a little more effort. The AMD motors do not come apart very easy and can be quite a challenge. Other motors practically fall apart by themselves.

What did you do with the old motor?
