I’m trying to figure out if I need to mess with finding someone that can reprogram my 2005 gem controller or get a newer one that can be reprogramed. My 7.5 motor was made 12/09. Seems to run fine other than getting very very warm/hot after running for 5 miles. So I’m not sure if I need a controller fix or a new motor. Let me know what you guys think.
How hot? Measure the case temperature.
they all get hot . you need to measure how hot yours gets . which controller version do you have ?
I’ve never tested mine , I well measure it in the next couple days for a reference .
My friends meter showed 240 deg

This is the thread on T3, motor, and MM performance.
If op is still around, he may have some tips.
As I said in email, grant reports less than ideal performance using MM on T3 cars.

I didn’t re-read it. Hope it’s helpful.
! check for dragging brakes. Jack up each corner - wheel should move freely
2 Your motor is 8 years old. Ride 4 Fun Motors need to be taken apart and and cleaned every 3 years. This MANDATORY for the black motors. The brushes need to be removed and the holders cleaned and the brushes sanded on all 4 sides to give more clearance. They need to have some CLEARANCE in the holders to prevent sticking. Sticking brushes are the #1 cause of motor failure. The black motors have gained a reputation of failing. This is solely do to sticking brushes and can be 100% cured by giving the brushes a lot of clearance.
Actually the root cause is the manufacturing specs of the blue and more so the black are so precise that it resulted in too close a fit for the brushes. In the field the motors pick up crud and the brushes stick.
Dont worry about taking too much material. off - too loose is not a bad thing. 95% of the motors I service is for this problem.
Thank you sir! I took it apart cleaned it and called D&D. I should have new brushes soon. I’m not sure but it would be nice to understand at what point do all coil wrap and what ever else in the motors fail. Just curious!
I just checked the brakes when I first bought the cart and had to replace the master brake cylinder o-rings. Works fine now.

Normally if you keep the brushes free and light sand the commutator wit.h 220 every 3 years there is no life limit to the armature or stator windings. Changing out the bearing is ok BUT on black motors requires extra care and application of heat to the end bell or it will break when pulling it of the armature. Bearings are normally good for 20,000 miles. be sure to use a NEW rubber bumper and grease splines.
