Hello I’m new to the forum and Gem. I recently bought a 2006 gem everything there but batteries. I haven’t tested anything.
Then a deal came up for a 2003 new batteries and ran great. I took that one as well because it was registered. Are there any parts from the 2006 I should swap over? Disc brakes? Controller? I guess I could use the 03 batteries and see if the 06 runs but it does need more work from just looking. Share your thoughts. Thanks
I more/less agree with Inwo.
The 06 is a far better platform to build a car from.
If you have space, time, and cash → Run the 03 around while you go through the 06 at your leisure. The first car is usually where you figure out how the car will work for you. Depending on your environment, your car may need to be tailored to your needs. Usual upgrades are speed, range, lighting are first upgrades. Having both a Gen1 and Gen2, you will see the limits of the Gen1 cars.
When you get the 06 moving, then you can sell off the 03.
Gen 2 improvements
Here is a short list of a few improvements starting in 05 and up cars.
05 was a transition year and is kind of a red headed stepchild. They aren’t bad, have many of the following updates, but some wiring changes were still being worked out when this car went to market. A few bonus stars removed for featuring the hobbled T3 controller.
06 and up features the following improvements.
Better motor controller → T4
Better suspension/Ride quality
Front Disc Brakes (better stopping)
Bigger wheel studs
Better wiring/ fuse panel
Easier steering
Better charger
Neat little color LCD Dash Display
Controller and charger moved up front so they can get some cooling air flow
More ideal Battery layout (easier to upgrade to Lithium pack where the real fun begins!)
Offset gearbox (so you can get bigger/better motor options)
Optional factory aluminum wheels
Optional factory hard doors
Gen 1 gears typically 10.33, Gen 2 - 12.44 option. Later might be 10.33/12.44/14.76 depending on model
(I’m sure I am forgetting a few other things)
