2002 E825 questions

Hi everyone, new member here. About six weeks ago I bought a 2002E825 from an auction. Put new batteries in it and the motor would just spark. It was a DD blue motor. I put a stock motor in it and now it drives fine and I have been having a great time with it. I want to upgrade the motor, but I have a question about the controller. If I lift the front of the gem up and press the accelerator, my speedometer will go up to 40. Does this seem that my speed controller has been reprogrammed because I would imagine it should cut out at 25. I can go 26 or 27 mph going downhill (30mph on gps due to 22” tires). I am just wondering if I won’t have to get things modified or reprogrammed if I get a 7.5hp motor. I also wonder if it’s worth rebuilding the DD motor?

Fix the d&d motor. Imo
And don’t blow up the working motor by over speeding it.

Yes- Fix the blue motor. Most likely stuck brushes and some cleanup.

What motor did you put in there as a spare? You need to be careful running the car up on stands as accelerating without resistance will ramp up the speed faster than the limiter tends to kick in. If it actually maintains the 40 on the dash then the controller most likely has been dialed up. If the controller has been modded so there is no more limiter and you run wheels up then over speeding the motor has the possibility to cause it to fly apart.

Once back on the ground the same goes for high speed downhill runs. It may be addictive, but if it is a large hill/drop, high speeds can be reached that can damage your motor.

Doing the math (22in tall wheels, 10.33 gears(guessing), 40 mph = 6400 motor RPM. That’s not bad. Just be aware that this stock motor is probably rated @4200.

The difference between wheels up speeds and actual driving around on the ground is figuring out what is keeping you from the same speed. Rolling resistance from dragging brakes, low tire pressures, alignment, not enough motor, resistance in the power system(bad connection somewhere), or weak/tired/not enough battery all come into play.

Stopping is another topic. The Gen1 cars don’t have the best brakes. Bigger tires makes it worse.

Awesome. Thanks for the input! Are there cheaper options for brushes for these? Seems crazy to spend over 200 for brushes

Y- they do seem to be on the pricey side.
Check yours out first. If simply stuck (and you are gentle) you might be able to salvage what you have.

I took mine to a starter shop. I think it was $150 for a rebuild.
