When you reassemble use Honda M-77 spline paste. Will keep it from sticking again, gets rid of a lot of the whining, and stays on much longer than grease. It is made specifically for splines. Congrats on saving that GE7, great motor.
Thanks for the tip about the grease @LithiumGods. I just dropped my motor off to be freshened up (new bearing, brushes, commutator machined, etc.) and I was amazed at how difficult it was to find a shop who actually did that sort of work, even in a big city like Atlanta. We are truly a throw away society.
