Lithium upgrade Next generation (and update on version 1)

Nice job.
Where can I buy some of those?

i’ll sell you mine $3,000 ready to drop in . should last 20 years

ok took it for is maiden voyage . first the deltaq set on gels charged the pack to 84.7v which is unusual because with a set of gels it goes to a balance charge every time of 96v . will need to explore this more . so calibrated the gauge for the lithium and away i went . It accelerates similar to the leaf pack , not quit as fast but very close . i limited top speed to 37mph with the 5hp and it hits it with no problems .

so driving wise about the same as leaf cells . the biggest difference is in voltage matching to the gem .on the leaf cells if you are charging them for longevity you are from 4.05v on the high side to 3.5v on the low ( they die fall off hard below 3.5v) so a pack of 20 cells gives you a v range of 81 to 70 , 21 cells 85v to 73.5 .

the gen controller works all the way down to 60v you cant get anywhere near there because the cells have very little power below 70v .

on the LTO cells you have a v range from 86v to 64v so the power stays pretty flat thru most the range and the cells fall of gradually . the last 5 miles were sluggish but still reached a speed of 30 mph , you get plenty of notice that its time to get home . also the gauge matched up perfect , when it hit red it had about 2 miles then turtle .

the cells have a rating of 65ah which is conservative . at lower to mid 30’s mph , with full throttle starts in around town driving it went just under 28 miles , 5 more then my estimate . 30 miles would be achievable with some tweaks but to be honest its more then i will ever go between charges so i will probably leave it as is .

the main advantages here a super long life . you can fully discharge these cells everyday of the year and probably get 20+ years out of them . they can handle heat and cold and the best part is they can be discharged to zero and it wont hurt them , they are very tuff cells .

now if i already had a lithium cart i probably wouldn’t go thru the effort to upgrade to these , the volt/leaf conversion is much easier . but for me if i was going to do a conversion and could get my hands on some , i would do it , they will be the last set up batteries my cart will ever need .

If you are serious about selling after all you have invested. It should be no problem.
A drop-in 30m pack for $3k that will last forever and not damaged in long term storage.
When will you be in full production?
Do you want to test a 66ah 6p pack? :slight_smile:32s bms + 192s X $10 = $2k .
That might be doable? Is math right?

Hi kinghappy
thanks for battery info,
how can i calibrated the gauge for the lithium ?

run your pack down to were you would call it empty .turn key on , then hold the trip button down , push turn signal up then down then center , release trip button . your now in programming mode . flip the turn signal up repeatedly until you see soc , hit trip meter once , this gives you a percentage , use the turn signal up or down to get the number you want then hit trip button one more time. turn off key .

ok thanks
do think it will also work good on Leaf batt ?
or only on LTO

i did it on my leaf cars too

Coming soon. 30s lto low voltage test with super batteries.
$3k x 3.:fearful:
A reverse spoof in the works?

So is there a lithium option now available for the 2016 MY 48V vehicles?

I don’t have one to test, so I don’t know the voltage limits.

This may be it:

Note 2: Working voltage range outside which the controller will be non-operational

If Gem does not have them limited. A 16s Bolt module. 160ah 10kwh is perfect. 67 volts maximum.
I can turn it into a drop in conversion if it fits mechanically.

I can make it fit if it doesn’t drop into the battery tray. I am modifying the back of my Gem already to shorten it

Shouldn’t have teased you. I have no idea how this will work. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It may be more than your budget. At ~$3k 9.5kwh

MVC-014F
Gen2 16s Volt modules are also 60v and 1/2 the money. 1/2 the kwh also of course.

You can also buy from Polaris.

There is just under 36" between the rails so it will fit easily. We could fit two, one above the other if we wanted to get really greedy

The Polaris options are way out of my budget, but if this will get me to the 35-40 mph I am looking for then I would try to find a way to get the “play money” together to make it happen. What else would be needed? Is it still charged through the stock port?

I’m sure the speed is limited to 25mph legal limit. Polaris may have the controller locked.
The only way I know to increase speed is gear change.

What charger is it?

I didn’t realize there was a legal limit to the speed.:frowning: If you can drive on 35mph roads I figured I’d be less of a nuisance if I did the speed limit

It has the basic charging system where you just plug in an extension cord.

It’s mainly a manufacturers limit. Most feel the same. Better to keep up with traffic.
I have found no information on reprogramming Sevcon (if sevcon) controls in a Polaris.
They are most likely locked and protected.
In that case, speed needs to be increased mechanically.
It may be possible to put tiny tires on car. Have a Gem dealer correct speed, then put on the largest that fit.
Or change gear ratios.
Look for the box that ac cord goes into. Previous Gems used DQ that can be programmed to Lithium.
