Li-Ion charging

Battery forum isn’t working.

First look at 12s quick charge octopus.

About same money as high end charger.
Less, considering off-board charger will work for multiple vehicles. If it works out as hoped, may sell my delta-Qs, and come out ahead.

In a milk crate until a better idea comes along.
Very cool running. Good efficiency & 12 fans.
Standardized 14p plugs.

1 green light so far. That’s a good sign. :clap2:Turning it off for the night so as not to burn the house down with first charge cycle.

Even though cells were very close to the same voltage, they were grossly out of balance.

Hours between finish charge of cells.
I may become a believer in bms.

Just completed finished product using oem bms enclosure and harness.

Chevy Volt wiring is exceptionally well designed. Would be a shame to waste it.
Blue bundle is mine. Best I can do!:o

Picture is breakout wiring,of parallel 12s batteries, going to plug of octopus quick charger.

Something unexpected is going on with battery packs. After several charge cycles to 4.1 volts with no bms, one cell on each pack is taking hours more to charge.

My assumption is that there is more to lithium charging than just charging to equal volts.

A real “smart charger” is needed to keep them equal and happy.

May look like complete overkill.:rain:

Yet total cost, even getting Volt batteries on Ebay, is about $1500.
That’s for a 88 volt Gem upgrade and 12s charger.
And have a DQ to sell.

I believe it’s less complex that bms wiring.

Time will tell if it works.

Just completed first full charge cycle.
Only charged to 4.1v/s before I got the real charger built.:D:eek:

Getting much better range with all cells fully charged.

Only snafu was one charger only charging to 3.9 volts.
Swapped it out and retesting a full charge cycle to 4.19v.

Also reworking the 48v Tomberlin from 55 volt back up to 66 volts.
66v seemed to be the sweet spot. Reprogramming could not get the performance back.
36 cells=2 X 18 paralleled. 66v ~100ah

88v seems to work best in Gems.

Replaced bad charger.
Repackaged them tighter. They run super cool.

Hi
looks good
do you not get code 16 with that high voltage ?

I have a fix for that.

Performance goes up. Current can be turned down.

Hey Dave: I have that Multi Bank charger that I took out of my GEM. It’s a 6 Bank charger, that will charger 6 individual batterys could you use that?

Possibly, if it’s set up for 12v I’m sure it’s more valuable to lead users.

By chance will you have another car to convert?
May be getting some 72v LTO lithium packs. ( 3 X 24v/60ah)
I could see if charger can be made to work with them.
Batteries would be $250 each.
Each 1/2 battery tops out at 14 volts.
Might work as is.

LTO is very safe chemistry.
Can be run dead.
Charges to 80% in a few minutes. If you have the juice. 350amps:eek:

That sounds interesting. I don’t have a car right now but I can keep my eye open for one. With my multi bank charger you can charge smaller sections or banks of the battery and effectively balance and charge at the same time this could work out well.

Yes,
I’ve been charging with 24v 30a forklift charger with good results.
Might work perfect for 3 X 24v.

I want to make a Gem test with 4 batteries. 40 cells charged to 2.5 each.
Hope to know more today.

dave,

can you tell me more about these cells ? might be interested in getting some.

Google LTO or lithium titanate.

I have access mostly to 60ah pouch cells.
Hope to get more 10s completed batteries.
Also 10s series packages without case.

2.3v nominal. 2.8v max. Supply good power down to 1.5v.
Not damaged by discharge to near zero.
350a charge/discharge rate. Charge to 80% in a few minutes.
Works in cold weather.

I have not found bms yet.
I’m balancing with 10 bank 2.75v charger for testing.

The 10s batteries have access to cells thru bms port. I have sourced the mating plug.

2nd from last picture shows 2 10s and one open 10s pack. 24v each
Last picture shows >350ah 4.8v pack.

Pouch cells.
These are sold.
Hope to get more.
$10 each for 60ah

They are $130 each plus shipping from China.

Test charged by matching 4 packs and connecting in a 6 series string.

I did save one cell.
If someone wants hands-on.
I’ll send it for cost of shipping.

I also have 2.75v 10 amp chargers.

I want to build something for my boat . 12v application . need to see what alternators max output voltage is.

charger is programmable so that would be easy.

Got in a bunch of 6s 13.8v packs.
Also 8s packs. 18.4v.
8s pack works down to 12v. Good choice for 12v. Can’t over charge.
