Has Tesla opened the door for EV competitors?

Each day seems to bring new revelations regarding the luxury end of the electric car market with Mercedes-Benz apparently on the verge of launching its own “Tesla Model S”. While Tesla has fought tooth and nail to maintain a stranglehold on the luxury end of the electric car market, has the company now opened the door for competitors?

Is this a classic case of first to market ultimately fails and those that follow learn from mistakes?

Mercedes certainly has the depth to do anything it wants, as does BMW and Volkswagen

Do the more established car companies have deeper pockets than Tesla?

Sure but Tesla seems to have enough at present.

What the Major car companies have is Engineering, Designing, Testing, Prototyping, Manufacturing, etc in unbelievable depth These things are acquired over time and no amount of money can create them instantly.
