2019 Gem EL XD Brainstorm

3 phase rotation only reverses if two of the three are swapped. If all 3 are mixed up it rotates the right way… poke :smiley:

Dave, cables aren’t labeled on the regular ac gems? Em’s have U, V, W printed on the cables perpendictular to the cable in a way that it reads in alphebetical order, left to right. To keep alphabetical order but flip U and W one would have to read it upside down.

(Trying to make CleanMD really jealus of the em1400s here…)

Are the encoders percise synced to actial shaft rotation angle or just dumb click counters on these vehicles? Any idea?

Just curious since the subject came up. Mine ain’t broke i haven’t had a need to look at how the set it up to fix it. … and em are different than other gems anyway.

@AssyRequired

Ah, those wires. Yea, They are labeled and in the correct placement.

However, now I want to test the phase wires voltage at the controller once the pedal is pressed. :100:

Good day, Sir! I say gain GOOOOOD DAY SIR!

Smarty pants. :jeans: Ordered… That clamp reader will be in tomorrow as well… :sweat_smile:

Sweet.

And I even got to use the new “nut kick” emoji!

Sevcon 622-11100 is a 12v converter. Not what you need. You need 13.5 or 13.8v output. Didn’t your test show over 12v at battery? Showing that converter is good.

“the DC converter is only throwing out 12.58 volts. Confirmed by checking the battery maintaining 12.58 with lights on”

Jumping ahead again. :slight_smile: A standard ammeter can not process vfd output current and certainly not voltage.

That thing was purchased like a week ago and is arriving today. At this point I’m going to install it regardless lol. Can’t hurt to have new stuff birdshotted in :joy:.

If you don’t mind explaining.. . What would typically supply the 12v battery the 13-14v it needs to stay charged under load, if the factory installed converter only supplies 12.58v? (I’m not buying random sevcon parts, it’s the exact same one on my cart).

I can’t make out the 36/48v to 12xx in your picture.
12.58v ?
Maybe that’s the reason your 12v batteries is not staying charged. It also may be that there is a steering diode in the charging circuit, which will eat another .6v.
Not all Sevcon dc converter models are designed for battery charging. I’m just going from memory (poor in my case) but I believe my 2016+ used 13.5v converter.

“The recommended float voltage for a 12V AGM battery is typically between 13.5V and 13.8V.”

ps.
One I have here is 13.5v out.

Maybe the 622-11100 is special. The Polaris manual states 12-14v output. When I looked up the part number, it was 12v output. I’m curious now and will try to find specs from Sevcon.

No luck finding manual or specs. It does state regulated 12v output, which will not maintain a 12v agm battery.

Yeah, you want the 13.5 or 14.1 volt output. They can be hard to find.

The 622/111xx part number indicates the output connector and internal configuration like if it has a fuse or not. Where as, iirc, the voltages are only on the nameplate. If someone has never dealt with them, its eeally easy to get confused. Online pictures not matching descriptions and everything has the same part number doesn’t help either.

That’s probably at least the second converter and the mix up for the wrong output voltage happened back when it was first swapped out.

Found this, stating that 12v in not regulated but nominal 12v, being 13v at 1/2 load. That may suggest open circuit voltage can charge the battery ok.

I stand corrected if output can rise to 13.5 volts. :frowning:

Polaris is Nickle and diming us out here… lol. Mine just says 12v that’s all.

If I bought one that was up to 13.5v output, would it work for my system? I noticed one that was similar but it has “-in + in-enable” which mine does not currently have (only -In + In).

I’ll try the new one that is coming in today first tho and report back.

That would also not surprise me… Techs just using what’s on their trucks..

Part numbers for these 622/111xx converters are all screwy Dave.

Remember when we talked about # of sdi cells in emmy? As you know, em’s don’t use aux batteries, and the voltage converter could not take an extra cell or two if regen kicked in hard, i tried to find a 60V to 14v 500w and a returned converter later, i found out how ambiguous the part numbers were

@CleanMD i don’t think the one you bought will work. It needs a separate on/off signal that i don’t think gems use. Pin 5 “enable” is no bueno.

I’m not sure if it can be tricked with a custom connection to the enable circut on pin 5 or what would be necessary to do for this.

Either 4p or 5p will work. There was an update and adapter harness early on, for a high failure part.

I found a second converter hiding under the controller.. This one is a 14.1v (622-11111) model… Go figure.

@JarJarJava mentioned the second one may have been for emergency lights. Plausible for sure. So in my opinion, they both hit the 12v line, the battery is only catching the 622-11100 (12v) and something is wrong with the 622-11111 (14.1v ) . I wonder if the 622-11111 powers anything other than battery charge? Maybe something that has to do with motor? :crossed_fingers:t2::joy: It has some pretty thick wire boys going in and out of the controller.

@AssyRequired @Inwo

Hold the phones… let me figure out how to re run this wire before we do any further brainstorming…We got a runner…

@AssyRequired @Inwo

Fixing that wire fixed the battery charging issue. Now I’m just left with the motor issue. Also- the new speed sensor did not change anything… Slightly stumped.

@JarJarJava Plus- I got a clamp meter to check the M1-M3 to the motor and with the clamp fully closed on AC it showed 0L and was mad beeping at me on all Three wires with pedal pressed down. When I held the clamp open slightly, it showed 30a, 30a, and 15a. However, my meter may not be cool enough to measure accurately.. :man_shrugging:t2:
