No, it’s a dumb part. Check for volts
Pin A +10v red
Pin D B- black
Middle two are quadrature signal output. Square wave 90deg offset. Tells controller speed and direction.
A meter should show activity by rolling car.
Don’t pay oem price. It’s a standard encoder as used in either club car or ezgo. Ezgo iirc. If it looks right it fits. Amazon?

Unless it was overvolted, I doubt it died. If it was, may have damage vcm as well. Try it first if you have 5v or 10v at encoder plug. Will work at either volts. IIRC

It has helped me repair two forklifts. But not until wasting weeks in rabbit holes of incorrect data. You post illustrates this perfectly.

I am getting 10.6v at encoder. So bad encoder at this point?

Okay, I just tested the other wires.

Findings-

Pin D - Brown

Pin A - Orange (Pin A to D 10.6 v)

(Pin D to Pin B) .10v then goes to 0v when I spin the wheel.

(Pin D to Pin C) Goes to roughly 7v when wheel spins.

Have some fine parts arriving on Monday… lol

You’re not wrong. I have learned to double check with multiple AI’s to confirm most things. However, I understand they usually piecemeal things when it is not sure. For example combining information from previous gen models (23 pin). It’s helpful at times, but I am a YouTube trained car mechanic and a tech data trained aircraft mechanic from my military days. All of which I could follow some sort of tech data. You my friend… are worth more than I can describe.

Was this vehicle Navy surplus?

Hardy har har. Cuz it was a Uboat right? :joy:. It was Army.

No, because the speed selector doesn’t do anything. …

You know how old style engine telegraphs work, right?

They don’t actually do anything. We would set the turns in the engine room. Banging a bell to setting was just the bridge saying “please go faster, pleasssssssseee”

That’s pretty good lol. As an Airforce guy I would not know about all that. Our aircraft controls worked pretty good :joy::skull:.

Lucky bastards.

I heard you guys got fresh fruit and salad bars too…

Found the link for the Polaris parts site…
Chose “LEV” product line for GEM.

The following is where I bought my eM1400 service manual, but that was before the GEM line became Wavezzzzz (or whatever). And eM1400’s are just 2WD Electric Ranger 500’s with dump beds. Maybe you can put in the vin and get lucky.

Worth a shot…

One more possibility. Any chance that phase wires got mixed up? Long shot as it reverses motor rotation.
This would put encoder and motor out of phase. Reversing A and B encoder ouput will have same symptoms, but that isn’t possible without cutting wires.
I need to scroll back to see what you did to motor. Damage to 64 tooth encoder target? You can see it through hole.
As you’ve never seen it run, anything is possible.

I forgot to take direct photos of it while the motor was off, but I’ll upload what I got. It all looked pretty normal, but I’m no expert.

What about motor phasing? It won’t hurt to switch two phase wires. I’m not sure about your meter results. In theory, at least, both A and B signals should read the same. I have yet to find a bad encoder, yet replacements being so common, it could be a high failure part.

Or- Just as a test, Unscrew that screw on the encoder and spin the encoder around 180 and try running the car again.

But don’t do both (swapping cables AND spinning the encoder).

I’ll try this out! Thank you. I really did not want to cut into my wires unless absolutely necessary. :100::+1:t2:

I’ll see about this when I get home and see what it does!

That is not quite what Inwo was suggesting.
On top of your motor there are 3 large power cables. It is possible someone put them on in the wrong spots. This would make the motor do what you are experiencing.
Get out some wrenches and swap two of them.
Another test is to spin the encoder 180 (in theory).
