My factory-installed radio (Lightning Audio-1500BT) died and I need a replacement and hopefully upgrade to better model. The model installed is only 4 inches deep but I think I need a larger (i.e. deeper) radio. Has anyone upgraded their radio? If so, what brand/model did you go to and how did you overcome the welded bracket that limits the depth of the radio?
I put this one in my 16", is is less than 4" deep. Fit perfectly. It is not going to rock the stage but it works for a golf cart.
I use the Sony MEX-BT100 it’s a Powerfull single Bluetooth head unit. Check out all the reviews on it. It’s got some serious power for a indash stereo.
This is the 100 watt unit. They have a cheeper 50 watt unit
Also jut FYI for anyone looking to do this.. most of these new radios are mostly empty inside the one I wanted was about 5.5” deep but I took out the “guts” and transferred it to the stock radio enclosure. Was super easy and give you a lot more options. Can upload some pics for anyone interested but you can get a nice screen with wireless apple carplay for < USD150
I forget the name of them. But a Normal CD Car headunit is like 8 inch’s or so deep. And the ones that work in the 2016+ gems are like 1/2 as deep as the normal full sized head units. I wish I could remember what they are referring to as, the 1/2 sided one’s with a full DIN opening is the size of the face plate opening Example a typical EQ is 1/2 DIN & a Normal sized CD player is a Full Din. Some of the Touch screen larger units are called “Double Din”
I bought this one: Amazon.com: BOSS Audio Systems BVCP9700A-FL Single DIN Car Stereo Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 7 Inch Touchscreen, Bluetooth, AM/FM Radio Receiver : Electronics
it was about 2” too long. So I took out all the internals and transported it to the stock radio enclosure. Now it sits perfectly flush and I have a nice little screen.
Have any other pictures? Considering doing just this…
I can grab some for you tomorrow.
Thank you, I’ve been going crazy looking for a shallow depth touchscreen that is actually a name brand.
Likewise - it was a bit of a journey
