2010 Gem E-4 Key switch replacement

I need to replace my key switch due to a short because when I got the unit the lock nut on the key switch spindle was missing and switch was jiggling around in the column. Do I need to pull the steering wheel to open the instrument pod in order to access the key switch wiring harness?

You could go high tech with a fob…

Assuming I did, I would still need to get to the wiring harness which is the info I require, but thanks for the reply.

No- Leave the steering wheel alone.

You need to pull the steering pod apart. Note the main pod face that you see while sitting in the driver seat, and how it has two halves covering the back that extend down the column towards the dash and floor. You need to remove the right hand side of the back side to get access to the key switch. The only catch is that down near the bottom is one last screw that is totally covered by the lower dash panel.

So it really helps if you remove the lower dash panel to get at that last screw. It’s not as scary as one would think. The lower dash is held in place by three tek screws on tabs at the top of the panel inside the dash assembly. You get access to those three screws by removing the Upper Dash panel.

To remove the Upper Dash panel, locate the two screws that hold it in place. They are located at the base of the windshield up front under the hood. Once removed, go back inside and pull on a corner of the upper dash and seperate it from the lower dash. They are stuck together with velcro. Once you get a bit pulled apart, slide a card up between the two so it doesn’t re-stick as you are working down the line.

Once- fully apart, the whole section will float out the pass side.

Good luck,

Ok,
Thank you for the detailed explanation. It doesn’t sound too bad. I’ll keep you posted as soon as I get a chance to get into it!
