Hello and good day to all. I recently bought a GEM golf cart, and although I don’t know much about them, I’m learning.
Unfortunately, my cart setup didn’t come with original parts, but it did come with an old Altrax AXE 4844 controller. It has been converted to 48V.
My parts are as follows
Altrax AXE 4844 controller
Albright SW202 Reversing contactor
MZJ 48V 400A main contactor
0AWG wire
Now the issue I’m running into is upon having my Altrax Pin1 KSI wire connected I still can’t get my main solinoid to click.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I’m not exactly where to start here…
It sounds like someone(Prev Owner) was so frustrated trying to get their Gem car working that they ripped out the entire nervous system and replaced it with a Golf cart system. I admit, Gen1 2001 wiring was not the greatest, but at least I can pull up a wiring diagram, have you trace a few wires, put a test jumper on A to B, and show you where to hit a thing with a hammer to make it go.
You jumped in on someone’s great idea/hybrid/frankenstein project that no one else knows how to work on. The learning curve is going to be steep for a new guy that is new to Gem cars, but better if you know how to work on generic golf carts. This is where you should probably be looking first. Bonus if you had received this car in working condition, but it sounds like you don’t know the condition/history of any of the vital bits, if they are at least working or if the controller has the basic program loaded.
Currently, you need to step into the head of the last guy and figure out where he left off. Personally, I think the downgrade back to a 48v system (from 72v) is going to hobble the fun factor of this build, but depending on your intended use, it may work out.
If you haven’t already, start gathering files. A quick look finds this PDF of basic wiring needs for Alltrax 4844. (forum settings do not currently allow posting PDF files directly, but here is a link to the outside source. If you can’t get at it, I converted the relevant page to a big jpg below)
Q1 → What is the current status so far? (main relay does not go “clack”)
When powered up- Does the controller LED light up with status?
Q2 → Do you have a meter?
Q3 → What is your background?
Q4 → What made you think this was a good idea?
Include some pics of this car. Is it possible this is a 1998 Trans2(early Gem design) and not a 2001 Gem?
While my background with gems and golf carts is limited, I am actively learning more about these topics.
The controller currently has no LEDs illuminated, even when the key is turned or the throttle is pressed..
At the time I was simply looking for a cart to quickly flip and sell for profit, but as I quickly learned that wouldn’t be the case, even more so when the previous owner went silent.
I’ll provide photos of what the previous owner did to say the least it was a rats nest.
This is the current progress by the way. I am aware there is no ground I removed it shortly before so as to diagnose the controller desperately.
Previous owner was running 36v
3 36v white rodgers
36v motor
No DC DC converter I assume was bypassed
6 6v lead acid batteries.
You may want to look into what you could get by parting it out via ebay, facebook gem group, golf cart forums, etc. As you may end up being married to support this thing for service and operation questions if you sell it as a complete vehicle.
