Lithium Conversion(again)

That’s right! I forgot you also like to go out barefoot and pee on the neighbors electric fence.

00-04 don’t have a PSDM. That started in 05 when the T3 came out and pod got the full display screen

No SOC reset on T1 & T2 as i recall. Center pod round dial LED simply translates voltage to % . Signal supplied via the 8 or 12 pin jumbo RJ connector alond with MPH and at key off ODO mileage. I don’t remember offhand if the display does the translaton or its actually already supplied as a % from the controller. The lack of any memory for SOC is one of the reasons why its so jumpy. It’ll do stuff like pop back up to 100% just when lightly used batteries voltage climps as thry sit and cool, then 50 feet later its reading 84%.

Also i had my piezo sleaker disconnected and jumped the switch to the brake off position permanetly at one point. Batteries charged fine. No speaker, so couldn’t hear the controller complain. If switch is in brake on position, it won’t permit FWD or REV movement.

00-04 with T1 and T2 are kind of primitave. If the suspension, steering, frame cracking and anemic motor had been different, those controllers were actually fun. It was the cart around them truly sucked. The controllers were dumb as box of a rocks. You could do stuff with them that you could never do on later ones. They took those features out or locked them up in the supermax and level 6 access wouldn’t get you to them anymore.

Yep. I’m hip.
This topic hops around a bit and details get a little lost. One of the quirks of jumping on an old topic and making it a multi-threaded conversation. I’ll scroll back up and add a modifier to my statement, but I did mention Gen2 Gem.

  • JoePico is apparently working on a 2001. ← JJJ’s advice applies
  • kh2 is working on a 2008 and the OP of this topic.

No worries Byron, we all do it. This very thread i thought @kj2 had a 2002 when it was really a 2008. When its @Joepiccaso who has the Battlestar GEMtastica. I think that when Pops jumped in with the DQ comment is how i got mixed up. So lets blame Dave. :+1:

.

Dave’s not here man.

Dave. Dave, what are you doing Dave?
I can’t see you anymore Dave. Are you still here Dave?

Hi,

I installed the Mighty Mite from Lithium Gods about 3 months ago in my 2000 E825 Gem. I’m very happy with the results. The entire pack fits under the hood. It’s not very particular what kind of charger is used so I stuck with my OEM Delta Q. I moved the on/off switch to be alongside a voltage meter I installed in the dash. Those guys are knowledgeable and very helpful. I’d talk to them before buying anything.

So, did you just use one 72V battery? I have a 2002 e85 and I’m starting to get into it. I just built a 48v LiFePO4 battery pack for my Club Car and looking to do one for the GEM.
My question is: should I do two battery packs or just one? With batteries currently under the seat and in the front, if I locate the battery in one or the other, what will that do to the handling? Or does it matter? I still have other work to do on it, but I’m starting the investigation phase now. The built-in charger doesn’t work, and the car came with a nice Delta Q charger, that I’d like to put in the car, but that may be a whole nother project. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you, Joe

Joe,
The battery pack I installed operates at just above 80 Vdc. I’ve been using my onboard Delta Q charger. It fits in the front where 2 lead acid batteries used to be. The Gem Car needs that weight there to provide decent traction and handling. If you wanted to extend range you could put another under the rear seat. I believe I can get at least 15 miles range but haven’t run it to dead yet. I live in a flat community and have to work to drive it 10 miles! Still plenty of power left at that point. The Mighty Mite battery cost me $1850, very happy with it.
Dave

I went with 2 of these in series. Batteries. Put in a 72v 10a charger. Got it on Amazon but it’s no longer listed there. Looks like this one but half price Charger Added a relay to handle the interlock automatically. Mine has separate 72v-12v converter so kept using that. Mine were all under seat so that’s where the new ones went. Everything works. Only put a mile on it so far to try it out. Still winter here in MN and I’ve got an axle out now for new boots. So can’t even guess on the range yet.

Very good, thanks! You did have FLA batteries in the front and under the seat before? But you put the one lithium in the front?

Since they are FWD I figured it needed ghe weight for traction and handling.

Thank you, Joe

When you say two in series are you saying two 36v batteries? So, yours didn’t have batteries in the front and they all were under the seat? So, it had 6-12v batteries before switching to Lithium?

Obviously, I don’t know a lot about these. I bought this one on a whim bc I liked the way it looks. I hope the FLA batteries in there now are good enough to get it going. I hate to spend too much on batteries if it doesn’t work. We’ll see. And, stay warm up there!

Thanks, Joe

Yes 2 36v batteries. And yes it had 6 12v all under seat. Think they went that way in 2005.

Very good, Thank you. Mine is a 2002, only a single seater. Since the batteries are in the middle, maybe I can put it under the seat without affecting the handling. Good info.

Thanks, Joe

Haha! I also was shamed into silence!

Please explain. There are jokers on here, but I don’t think they mean ill.

I was referring to the guy who modified his Gem into an LED train. I guess my reply disassociated with his post…

I’ve ridden with @Pythan in the LED train. It’s pretty damn amazing. Its Disney parade level quality, and he did it alone, in his garage…

Personally, i think for a 2002 GEM the HMS Titanic would have more appropriate, but Craig proved me wrong.

It was awful; right between the charger and the controller:joy:
