A question on D&D motors

I was wondering about the D&D motors that are seperatly excited. Apparently some of the D&D’s dont use perm magnets. They use feild coils to generate the magnetic field that the armature uses to move. Is that configuration more effiecent than a permanent magnet setup? If not, what would be the advanatge of using a seperatly excited motor system?

most EV conversions use series wound motors without magnets in them… perms are good for smaller stuff, but when you get larger, heat effect on the magnets comes into play. They do run about the same efficiency though. Sepex and series are very similar, except the field coil on series is run in series with the armature. Sepex is seperately excited by the controller (basically uses 2 controllers).

using sepex allows you to go higher speeds. When the RPM’s get high, the controller can field weaken and allow the motor to overspeed. You’ll need to find a controller for sepex to match it. How many volts are you running? Whats it going in? You can run high speeds, and sometimes lower current. They also reverse without a F/R contactor.

I hope to run a 60 volt system (5 AGM batteries [or 10 AGM batteries for more amphourage])

I’m going to build the rig from lightweight aluminum alloy rods and bars. I’ll only use steel where I absolutly will need it. Curb weight goal with 5 batteries is 800lbs.

I’m going to go with a 400amp max controller made for SEPEX systems. I am probably going to use a D&D motor SEPEX system. I hope that the controller I will use has the brake-regen feature.

Four 23" Hard-Surface ATV tires. One massive drumbrake and pad. All kinds of neat stuff. My friends/financiers will be comming home soon so I will be able to afford the good stuff.

Now to make sure I’m not in la-la land before I start buying the expensive merch.
