# How to Make Gem E6 Faster than 25mph?

Having the Distance AGM as an OEM option and installing the gear package the very first day of ownership, I’m unable to compare the range using the previous OEM transmission. However, I can compare the range to my 72V 2005 e2 that I bought new and owned for 15 years along with the upgraded RFF 7.5HP motor. There’s no comparison as the 2020 package far outperforms the 2005.
The furthest I’ve traveled so far is a 30 mile round trip that consumed only 3 bars [out of 10]. The vast majority of that trip was pedal to the metal. Otherwise, my routine round trips are 5 miles in length and use up only one bar.
I regret not buying larger diameter tires as I saw a 1/2 MPH increase in speed just by inflating tire pressure by 1PSI… Hard to say how the unbridled range would be affected with a higher speed - but I’m ready and willing to try the next option that becomes available in making that happen. 🧐

Depending on what tire you have, That might have been more of a rolling resistance issue than a change in tire diameter.
Is there anyone in your area that you can swap tires with just to test? Every community needs a version of the good ol’ days where a bunch of dudes could show up at a guys house to wrench on cars, bench race, drink beer, only with Gem cars.

And with all that weight you’d want to be sure you have very good brakes. I’m reminded of a story of a NEV cart owner who let their kid drive a bunch of adults around after a 4th of July event and one trip required going down a hill and they couldn’t stop loaded with adults and rolled the cart.

…damn sober kids.
GEM brakes suck… I had 4 full kegs in the back of my old '02 “eL” plus a passenger in the front seat, so that’s basically 1100 lbs in the truck. Pretty sure it I was in the next county over when I stopped after hitting the brakes hard… I think this was after the disc brake upgrade too. I don’t think the brakes on the '10 are that much better ether

have a new 2022 gem e6. From what I am reading the magic magnet will not work on this model and no one has figured out an easy way to change the speed limit through the controller. Only changing gears at minimum and maybe a stronger motor and or higher voltage battery = 5k option will get to 35+ mph. Is this still the case? Looking for 35mph. Not 40+. Although if no easy software/signal adjustment fix then I guess might as well do it all. Inwo I would appreciate your advice when you have the time.

Changing gears will reduce your max hauling & towing capacity. Something to think about with an e6 and a full load of passengers.

So far, the 2 known options to raise speed up to 35mph is Gears or controller swap.
Gears trade torque for speed, And also the new gearboxes 2018-2022 are so quiet that I wouldn’t even think about opening them.
one of the things I would like to point is that Speed Eats battery so More speed Less range.

Don’t think I will change gears then.
I do need the towing capacity.
Ok voiding the warranty.
A controller swap sounds like maybe the way to go then.
Who offers a controller swap?
Ok with less range.
May consider a lithium ion battery upgrade if necessary.

The guys here offer the controller swap.
Because of the controller swap, your speedo display pretty much goes Non-op. It can be replaced with GPS Speedo.
What battery package did you get with your car?
What is in your toolbox? (How much do you plan on working on this?)
Towing? (or just still thinking 6 people)
What terrain will you be running this car? (Big hills/mild hills/flat as a pancake)
What is your zip code? (aka- where are you located?)
This sounds like it might be time to start your own thread.

Probably should have done my own thread but I know some prefer not to have multiple threads on the same subject.
I have the distance AGM battery.
Good at working on cars and mechanically inclined. Have not worked on a Gem before.
No towing. Just a 6 people carrier.
23453 = Virginia Beach
Driving on roads only.
Small chance of near/on the beach.
Ok and realize the speedo becomes non-op with an aftermarket controller.
I guess anyone who sells a quality stand alone controller can reach out to me when convenient here on the forum.

I have an e4 that’s still under warranty. Had it in the shop getting anything warranty related fixed before ripping into. I thought the full warranty would be out the window. Dealer said making changes wouldn’t fully void the warranty, just for the stuff I swapped.
So if you do a controller swap, the controller wouldn’t be covered by Polaris but the rest you’d be fine with. I’m sure some of that depends on how flexible your dealer is.

VCM calculates the speed using Raw rpm data from sevcon and send it to the speedo.
we send scaled data directly from the Sevcon to the speedo bypassing the VCM.
