About 1 1/2 times more than a Golf Cart. But you don’t look nearly as good “doing it” and “doing it” faster.

Probably depends on your usage. If you don’t need “street legal” say for tooling around your private gated community at 20 mph, a golf cart is less expensive. If you want street legal (in most jurisdictions) and plan to take it on public roads with the possibility of upgrading controller programming and/or motor, than a GEM makes more sense. Cost is more for a GEM but so are the capabilities.
From a pure practical point of view neither is really necessary!

People buy GEM’s for the same reason they buy Cadillacs. There different and exclusive.
