# Gem Steering Column

I would like to know if you can change the column on a 2002 Gem. Can it be replaced with a newer adjustable column, or modified some way to give more room for the driver.

Hello,  
I have not seen or heard of any adjustable steering column for the GEM. One suggestion would be an offset steering wheel. A number of older Porsches used these to allow easier entry and exit from the small interior without the need for an adjustable column. I have not checked if any aftermarket steering wheels are offset. Another possibility would be a just a smaller steering wheel. This would pose problems for many drivers because a smaller wheel requires more effort and the steering effort needed is already high on the GEM. In addition, a reduction of wheel diameter of two inches will only yield one inch of additional room for the driver.
